Reuters – The European Commission will be “extremely critical” of Turkey’s reform efforts in a report next week, but that will not stop EU leaders agreeing to open membership talks with Ankara, EU officials said Saturday.
Update Oct. 6 : AP The European Union’s head office on Wednesday recommended the start of EU membership talks for Turkey but said the negotiations could be halted if Ankara backtracks on sweeping democratic and human rights reforms – a condition that angered Turkey’s prime minister.
If membership talks start early next year, as Ankara hopes, Turkey would not actually join the union until around 2015.
