Palin to Resign as Alaska Governor on July 26

Philip Rucker & Eli Saslow | July 3

WaPo - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) announced this afternoon she will resign from office on July 26 and return to private life, a stunning decision by last year's Republican vice presidential candidate to leave office before the end of her first term.

"We know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time on another scale and actually make a difference for our priorities," Palin said in a news conference alongside a lake in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska.

Using a basketball analogy, Palin said, "I know when it's time to pass the ball for victory."

Palin, 45, is a major star in the GOP and is seen as a leading candidate for the party's presidential nomination in 2012. Her decision not to run for reelection in 2010 and to leave office imminently came as a shock to Republican strategists today.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office later this month, according to several sources familiar with her decision, freeing her to build a national political team and travel the country in support of an expected 2012 presidential bid.

The first term governor is stepping down "so that she can take the fight for her issues elsewhere," according to a Palin aide.

Palin's decision comes amid polling that showed her losing altitude from the stratospheric heights to which she ascended following her election in 2006 but remained a strong favorite to win reelection.

Some Republican strategists expressed skepticism about Palin's decision.

"I'm not smart enough to see the strategy in this," said John Weaver, a senior party strategist. "Good point guards don't quit and walk off the court." ...continued

July 3 (Reuters) - Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said on Friday she will resign this month and will not run for re-election as governor amid speculation that she will seek the Republican party's nomination for president in 2012.

Following is a list of Republicans seen as potential candidates for their party's nomination in 2012. No candidate has announced that he or she will run for the presidency but U.S. politicians often start gearing up for a bid years in advance. ...

Best news I've had today - is there somewhere we can donate to her campaign?

I *love* this sentence - you can just relax and glaze over a bit and let the soothing gooey tide of sub-cretinous admin-speak gibberish wash over you. It's so close to English it could actually pass for it.

... "We know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time on another scale and actually make a difference for our priorities..."

"I can't believe it's not English!"

I can't *wait* until the debates (and interviews) - nor until Henry Hey puts music to them.

Palin is not a 'natural' woman - she's a mere product of the right wing, evangelical belief (a distorted cocktail) of what a woman 'ought' to be. She's just acting out her patriarchal destiny. In other words, she's been brain washed.

The patriarchy created this monster. You deal with it. If you create a woman who is sex positive and who cherishes her sexuality you will never produce another Sarah Palin.

...an idiot. Doubtless many other things - but the idiocy, I think that's all her own.

that the patriarchy encourages women to explore their sexuality ... that the patriarchy cherishes female sexual freedom ... that the patriarchy respects women who 'score' with as many men as possible ... that the patriarcy believes that sex is sacred, beautiful, and healthy for both men and women? I'd wager that any amount of idiocy that Palin has is only a mere sprinkling on top of a heavy layer of patriarchal foundation.

...that made the woman unable to string together 25 words in a way that conveys any meaningful information. The rest of it, I take no position on.

the past years that communication problems are a pre-requisite for US beauty contests.

I recall that Ms Palin hopped around educational facilities in her quest for a degree that got her a job as a TV sports commentator.

that whole 'beauty pageant' scene is sad. The participants are trapped in an imaginary world of ideal femininty - one they had no part in shaping. They play their role with sincerety and probably don't realize that men just laugh at them. I often feel embarrassed about my gender. How much ridicule is there to go around?

"...mainstream media has so far missed Palin's association with the aggressively supremacist New Apostolic movement but,

Sarah Palin is, broadly speaking, in the emerging postdenominational movement, which by 2000 encompassed 385 million Christians and is vastly different from the faith as it has been practiced in recent centuries. We identified Palin as in a majority tendency of postdenominationalism known as the neocharismatic movement, or the "Third Wave."
Evangelical missionary reference work World Christian Trends calls the Third Wave "a new and disturbingly different" kind of Christianity whose members "can accurately be called radical Christians with some pentecostal /charismatic parallels" and which has, as one of the distinctive characteristics of Third Wave Christian ministry, a heavy emphasis on healing miracles including raising the dead--an emphasis promoted from the pulpit in sermons at Palin's most central church, the Wasilla Assembly of God." The Huffington Post, By Nico Pitney, July 3

Reporters are beginning to piece together an explanation for Sarah Palin's abrupt resignation announcement that stands in stark contrast to the reasoning Palin offered in her speech.

Speaking on MSNBC, Andrea Mitchell reported that, according to "people very close to Sarah Palin," she has "told her supporters that she is out of politics, period. She is fed up with politics. She doesn't like her life. She feels that she needs to raise her family. She's sick of the commute from Wasilla to the capital. And she really does not want to run for higher office, that this is not a case where she is stepping down in order to clear the way for a presidential run. In fact, she has told some of her biggest backers in the national Republican Party that they are free to choose other candidates for 2012, which of course opens new avenues for Mitt Romney, for Tim Pawlenty, for other potential candidates who are definitely in the running."

Writing for the Daily Beast, Max Blumenthal pinpointed a burgeoning story that may be the source of the rumblings in Alaska:

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide open state.

Sarah Palin Resigning as Alaska's Governor

Huffington Post, By Shannyn Moore, July 3

Rumors of an "iceberg scandal" have been circulating.

Resignation is certainly out of character for Sarah Palin. Senator Mark Begich had a meeting with Sarah Palin two days ago with no mention of her leaving office. Palin's press secretary, David Murrow had posted on his Facebook page Wednesday, "David Murrow is considering life's ironies." He was hired less than a month ago. Yesterday he wrote, "There's gonna be some fireworks this weekend!"

What Is Sarah Palin Thinking? One Alaskan's Perspective

Huffington Post/Mudflats, By AK Muckraker, July 4

Then there is the other matter. In Alaska it's become known as "the iceberg." The iceburg is rumored to be a piece of news that's so damaging, and so big, it will sink the S.S. Palin. The rumors also exist that it's coming soon. Speculation about IRS problems, issues with other three-letter organizations, more ethics complaints, and embezzlement abound. Questions have been raised about the construction of Palin's house by a bunch of Todd's buddies, at the same time that a giant sports complex was being built in Wasilla, and right after building codes had been abolished by the then mayor of Wasilla, one Sarah Palin. Do we know anything for sure? No. But the recent claim that the breaking of this scandal is imminent seems coincidental to say the least. Alaskans hesitate to get too excited about rumored indictments, though. Despite the indictment and conviction of several state legislators, and the indictment-conviction and now un-conviction of former Senator Ted Stevens, the slow process has taught us patience. We still await rumored indictments of Congressman Don Young, and former State Senate President Ben Stevens (son of Ted Stevens.) Did I say, you can't make this stuff up?

RUMORS WRONG: Agent rebuts circulating allegations cited by Anchorage blogger.

Alaska Daily News, By Sean Cockerham, July 5

The FBI is taking the unusual step of declaring that Gov. Sarah Palin is not under investigation, as Palin herself left for Western Alaska and communicated to the world through her Twitter account.

"We are not investigating her," FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said on Sunday. "Normally we don't confirm or deny those kind of allegations out there, but by not doing so it just casts her in a very bad light. There is just no truth to those rumors out there in the blogosphere."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she's not only staying involved in national politics, but she plans to jump back into the national scrum when she leaves office at the end of the month.

The former Republican vice presidential nominee said she plans to write a book, campaign for political candidates from coast to coast — even Democrats who share her views on limited government, national defense and energy independence — and build a right-of-center coalition.

"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," she said during an interview published Sunday in The Washington Times.

...

"I'm not ruling out anything. It is the way I have lived my life from the youngest age," she said in the Washington Times interview. "Let me peek out there and see if there's an open door somewhere. And if there's even a little crack of light, I'll hope to plow through it."

The self-described hockey mom plans to write a memoir but declined to discuss any potential deal for her to become a television commentator.

"I can't talk about any of those things while I'm still governor," she said.

Yet she's already reminding audiences of her bipartisan and family-oriented appeal....

Sarah Baxter in Washington

Sarah Palin, the former vice-presidential candidate, has accused members of President Barack Obama’s administration of a dirty tricks campaign to derail her political career.

Palin’s bizarre announcement that she would quit her post as governor of Alaska on July 26 stunned political friends and foes and has been greeted with derision by a growing number of prominent Republicans. Some conservative insiders have accused the charismatic mother-of-five of succumbing to “paranoia”.

Among the many explanations for her abrupt departure – from an alleged desire to be free to pursue the presidency in 2012 to money worries and ethics problems – the theory put forward by her spokeswoman, Meg Stapleton, is that members of Obama’s White House are to blame.

Palin, 45, complained in her resignation speech on July 3 that she was being hounded constantly by “frivolous” ethics complaints. “This [is] political absurdity, the politics of personal destruction,” she said. “Todd [her husband] and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills to set the record straight.”

Stapleton told Time magazine last week: “A lot of this comes from Washington DC. The trail is pretty direct and obvious to us.”

Palin and her advisers believe the most damaging ethics accusation concerned “Trooper-gate”, when Palin was accused of pursuing a vendetta to get her former brother-in-law, Mike Wooten, sacked as an Alaska state trooper. A month before the 2008 presidential election, in which she was Senator John McCain’s running mate, the Alaska legislative council found Palin guilty of abusing her power after an investigator concluded that “impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda”.

Palin dismissed the finding as a partisan smear, but it furthered the impression that she was not presidential material after running Alaska, the least populous state in the union, as her own personal fiefdom.

Kim Elton, the Alaska state senator who chaired the legislative council, is a friend of Peter Rouse, Obama’s former Senate chief of staff, who used to live in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Rouse now serves as a senior adviser to Obama at the White House and Elton was appointed director of Alaska affairs at the US Department of the Interior in March.

Palin made no secret of her irritation at the alleged reward, saying Elton “pledged his allegiance to Obama last summer”. She is convinced Obama’s team had a hand in the Troopergate operation.

According to Stapleton, the barrage of ethics charges against Palin was typical of the hardball tactics of Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s combative chief of staff, as described in the book The Thumpin’, about how Emanuel steered the Democrats to victory in the 2006 congressional elections. “It’s how they operate,” Stapleton said.

The White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said: “The charge is ridiculous. From my vantage point a lot of the criticism she seems to be getting is from self-inflicted wounds.”
