UK: Straw blocks publication of pre-Iraq war discussion

Frank Prenesti | London | February 24

Reuters - The government refused on Tuesday to publish records of cabinet discussions on the legality of invading Iraq in 2003, despite a tribunal ruling in January that it should release them.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw used a ministerial veto to block the request made under the Freedom of Information Act, saying the release of the records would "in my judgement risk serious damage to Cabinet government."

"The decision to take military action has been examined with a fine-tooth comb; we have been held to account for it in this House and elsewhere," Straw said in a statement to parliament.

"But the duty to advance that interest further cannot supplant the public interest in maintaining the integrity of our system of government."

of state who gave the order to invade Iraq, Some sort of "gentleman's agreement" to forget and move on. Pure speculation on my partand it could just be Labour Party politics, but from the way Obama is acting on this issue I don't think so.....

'Your right for the truth doesn't trump our right to keep our jobs or be free from prosecution and embarrassment.'

and he has the nerve to mention integrity lol!

The Guardian has good coverage, with a lot of pissed off opinions on the right sidebar.

2.Lost in Lagos? The mystery of Jack Straw and the Nigerian scammers

Jack Straw’s decision to veto publication of Iraq minutes is a disgrace. Every member of the present government, from Gordon Brown downwards, should hang their head in shame.

Actually it forbids the domestic publication of British embarrassment. Not very effectively, either. I remember a street map of London selling for fifteen pounds with a free copy of "Spycatcher" included with every purchase. That lasted about twelve hours, but even in the 80's the British could read about British secrets more easily than Russians could read forbidden Russian poets.

We have the same delusion in America. They tried to classify Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier, despite the fact that Mach's work was widely published and a giant boom over a gossipy air base could only result in 1) a well-attended public military funeral or 2) a pilot showing up at the local bar and not having to pay for his own drinks. Even better was the episode where the authors of the RSA algorithm were yanked out of the customs queue, fresh from having presented their paper at an academic conference in Tel Aviv, and warned not to discuss their work with non-American citizens. Apart from the arrival/departure confusion and the thousands of pre-existing violations (complete with photocopied mathematical proofs), there were at least one and a half reasons why that wasn't going to work.

That is worse than actually releasing them.

It's not like somebody's going to register JackStrawDiscussions.com and turn the whole thing into a well-documented term paper complete with timelines and embedded video of public announcements. That sort of thing doesn't happen to secret memoranda in Downing Street.
