US Rep (OH) Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio dies after hemorrhage

M.R. Kropko | East Cleveland, Ohio | August 20

Associated Press - Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress and a strong critic of the Iraq war, died Wednesday after a brain hemorrhage, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Tubbs Jones, 58, died Wednesday evening of a brain hemorrhage caused by an aneurysm that burst and left her with limited brain function, said Eileen Sheil, a spokeswoman for the Cleveland Clinic, which owns the Huron Hospital in East Cleveland where Tubbs Jones died.

"Throughout the course of the day and into this evening, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones' medical condition declined," Sheil said in a statement from the clinic and Tubbs Jones' family.

My wife and I met Rep. Jones when she delivered a eulogy at the funeral of a mutual friend last year, and she spoke to my daughter's high school Government classes this past spring. We were all very impressed with her. She had a presence that made everyone she touched feel welcomed, respected, and a valuable resource in her legislative agenda. I want to attend her funeral, but I don't expect to be able to get within ten blocks of the church that day. I think her memorial service could pack Cleveland Browns Stadium should the city choose to hold one there.

Her death follows on the heels of Cleveland's beloved activist councilman Fanny Lewis. Ms. Lewis fought the good fight for her ward, which includes the impoverished Hough and Fairfax neighborhoods(where my place of business is located) for forty-two years.

The U.S. has lost one passionate activist; Cleveland has lost two it couldn't afford to lose.

CPD - The unexpected death of U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones -- less than three months before Election Day -- has sent state and local elections officials scrambling to figure out what to do in this unusual situation.

Two things have to happen:

• Democratic Party officers from Tubbs Jones' 11th Congressional District must replace her in the Nov. 4 general election. They probably will do it by Sept. 26, when the Cuyahoga County Elections Board starts printing ballots.

• Gov. Ted Strickland must schedule a pair of special elections so district voters can pick the person who will fill out the rest of the congresswoman's term. The first round, a partisan primary, will probably be slated for Oct. 14. Winners in the primary will probably meet on Nov. 18.
