Caught in the Web

Washington Post - A few months ago, it wasn't unusual for 47-year-old Carla Toebe to spend 15 hours per day online. She'd wake up early, turn on her laptop and chat on Internet dating sites and instant-messaging programs -- leaving her bed for only brief intervals. Her household bills piled up, along with the dishes and dirty laundry, but it took near-constant complaints from her four daughters before she realized she had a problem.

Oh man, I am so addicted. I wonder if they have WAA (Web-addicts anonymous) online?

similar to clinical depression. She should probably see a psychologist and maybe a psychiatrist to check out some anti-depression therapies and rejoin the real world.

...and I don't mean this in an insulting way....as one who is borderline depressed himself, I can see the similarities. Computers make it easier for depressed people to withdraw....no more need to interact with people directly

I pecked away at UseNet back in prehistoric times, but once the WWW really took off, I was desperately hooked.

I did suffer from chronic depression throughout my addictive period, which to me begs the chicken-and-egg question. I thought I was getting something from "interpersonal" contacts on the 'web, when what was really happening was that I was neglecting my family, my work, and my health.

My family did what amounted to an intervention, not with my computer time but with my withdrawal and ill temper. They convinced me to seek medical help. I was eventually able to resume life in "meat space" and have remained here ever since.
