World Peace Herald - In an exclusive interview with World Peace Herald, Abdul Monem Saeed, director of Al-Ahram's Center for Political and Strategic Studies (CPSS), explains the current situation of Lebanon, the Lebanese-Syrian relationship, and prospects for the disarmament of Hezbollah.

Saeed said protection for Lebanon will come from the U.N. Security

Council and "good relations with Syria". He said the phrase "good

relations with Syria" means not to make peace with Israel before

Syria does. Bahia El Hariri made this point when she said, "I will

repeat the words of my brother that Lebanon will be the last to

sign this treaty with Israel."

Saeed, one of Egypt's leading Middle East experts, expressed his fear that there is a high potential for the already tense Lebanese-Syrian relationship to grow yet more strained, and that civil war can develop in Lebanon.

"We are in a very critical period. On the one hand, we do not know how things will go on, and on the other it will depend on the behavior of a multiplicity of actors and parties," said Saeed, describing the situation in Lebanon.

An excellent piece. Abdul Monem Saeed offers a direct, sensible analysis of facts on the ground. -ww
